How the sun hits your building or house
A sun and shadow calculator for any building in the US. Choose the month and hour and see where the sun is, how long the shadow is, and which nearby buildings block your light.
Try it on your address
Open the map, search for the address, and start the simulation. You can scroll through the whole day and rotate the map around the building.
Open Lumina 360 on the mapOrientation
South gets the most sun, north gets the least. See exactly which way the facade faces.
Season
In summer the sun climbs high and shadows are short. In winter shadows grow several times longer.
Neighbors
A tall building to the south can shade the lower floors for months. The simulation shows how far the shadow reaches.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find out how much sun hits my building?
Search for the address on the map and open Lumina 360. Choose the month and hour, and the map shows the sun's position and the shadows of nearby buildings for that moment.
Which orientation gets the most light?
South-facing facades get the most sun over the course of the year. East gets morning sun, west gets afternoon sun, and north gets almost no direct sun.
Does the building across the street block my light in winter?
In winter the sun sits low in the sky, so shadows are much longer. In Lumina 360 you pick December and see exactly how far the shadow of nearby buildings reaches.
How accurate is the simulation?
The sun's position is calculated astronomically for the address coordinates. Building heights come from public data and are sometimes estimated, so the shadow is approximate.
Can I see the light inside the apartment?
No. The simulation shows the sun and shadow on the exterior of buildings. Indoor light also depends on the floor, windows, and balconies.
Does it cost anything?
No. The map, search, and sunlight simulation are free, no account needed.
