On both the left and right side of my home, set further than 25 feet from the street on the front side of my home (i.e. outside of the building restriction zone) i want to build wooden fence gates and posts. these fence posts and gates will not be attached to or touching either of the side fences that already lie on the border between my property and my neighbors' properties on either side. the new fence posts and gates on each side of the home will be set behind the front facade/wall of the home (i.e. further from the street than the front wall of the home). the gates will swing open inwards towards the back yard. on one side the gates will be 7 feet in length and on the other side 6 feet in length. the height of the fence posts and gates will be around 6 feet. i (benjamin master) am the co-owner of the home along with my wife beverly fang, which we hold in our joint trust.

What's worth checking in person before deciding.

  • This is a house, not an apartment. Check the lot boundaries, car access, and how water drains from the yard after rain, including whether the neighboring lot sits higher and could send water toward the property.
  • Test water pressure and temperature at the tap, in the bathroom and kitchen, for at least a minute.
  • Check exactly where you'd park: a spot in the yard or garage, or street parking, and how crowded the street gets in the evening.
  • Check the sewer connection (public network or septic tank) and the water source (public network or well), including pressure and water quality.
  • Check the roof, gutters, and downspouts for signs of leaks or recent repairs, especially if it has rained recently.
  • Check the condition of the fence, yard, and sidewalk out front: who is responsible for upkeep, and whether there are any boundary disputes with neighbors.
  • Ask to see the construction documents (permit, sign-off) and check for visible cracks on the facade or in the attic/basement.

Neighborhood recommendations are derived from public OpenStreetMap data and may be incomplete. Checking in person is still what matters most.
