My fiance and i moved to dc a few years ago and i am a first time homeowner. neither of us were aware that permits were required to get work done on private residential property. we just had a fence installed by a fencing company (contractor) and only found out that a permit was required afterwards. the fencing company did not inform us that any permitting was needed. we have tried contacting the numbers provided several times and have not been able to reach anyone nor had our phone calls returned. we are unsure what to do in order to rectify this situation and therefore decided to just submit a permit application in hopes that this would result in someone contacting us with instructions. please advise. additionally, i am unaware of most of the fence detail information requested in this application as the fence was installed by a contractor. i will guess in this application, and can provide clarification at a later time.

What's worth checking in person before deciding.
- This is a house, not an apartment. Check the lot boundaries, car access, and how water drains from the yard after rain, including whether the neighboring lot sits higher and could send water toward the property.
- Test water pressure and temperature at the tap, in the bathroom and kitchen, for at least a minute.
- Semi-detached or row house: the shared wall matters. Listen from the room adjoining the neighbor's side and ask whether any structural work has been done there.
- Check the roof, gutters, and downspouts for signs of leaks or recent repairs, especially if it has rained recently.
- Knock on a neighboring gate and ask about noise, pets, flooding, or other issues common in the area.
- Check exactly where you'd park: a spot in the yard or garage, or street parking, and how crowded the street gets in the evening.
- Check the sewer connection (public network or septic tank) and the water source (public network or well), including pressure and water quality.
Neighborhood recommendations are derived from public OpenStreetMap data and may be incomplete. Checking in person is still what matters most.
